Patagonia Maqui and Total ORAC
SCIENCE OVERVIEW & STATEMENT:
Patagonia Maqui Berry Company has taken the time and money to scientifically research the maqui berry in coordination with some of the food industries leading research groups including Brunswick Labs, Bell Advisory Services (now Bell Ventures) & Texas A&M Horticultural Science Facilities. As such, we have conducted multiple research studies on the maqui berry including Total ORAC, Glycation Inhibition, ORAC and lipid tests on the maqui seeds, and advanced broad spectrum chromatography tests to identify polyphenol compounds.
MAQUI BERRY GENERAL INFORMATION:
NOTE: Aristotelia Chilensis (Maqui or Chilean Wineberry) is a species of the Elaeocarpaceae family that grows wild in Chile and Argentina. The Maqui Berry bush which reaches a height of up to 4m-5m (12-15 feet) and has dark green leaves that grow opposite and oval. The flowers are unisexual, green colored and large. The purple maqui berry fruits are 4 to 6 mm in diameter (smaller than a blueberry), and contain 4 to 8 angular seeds. There is also a white variety of the maqui berry which grows in the Patagonia region in far less volumes than its purple counterpart.
MAQUI BERRY CHROMATOGRAM:
NOTE: We have taken the additional time and expense to perform a chromatogram using the raw maqui berry freeze-dried powder using a suitable extraction mixture as indicated below.
1/ FOLIN (Gallic Acid Equivalent) analyses in order to determine the polyphenol content of the Maqui.
Result: 5.52 % GAE on the Raw Maqui Berry Freeze-Dried Material indicating an extremely promising value.
2/ HPLC analyses using the method performed for our current polyphenolic extracts (proanthocyanidines type antioxidants)
KNOWN ANTHOCYANIDINS: (Delfinidin-3-sambubioside-5-glucoside), (Delfinidin 3,5-diglucoside), (Cyanidin 3-sambubioside-5-glucoside), (Cyanidin 3, 5-diglucoside), (Delphinidin 3-sambubioside), (Delphinidin 3-glucoside), (Cyanidin 3-sambubioside), (Cyanidin 3-glucoside)
The chromatogram results clearly indicate a different fingerprint compared to the proanthocyanidine type extracts typical of most antioxidant rich superfruits and exotic botanicals.
MAQUI BERRY & Total ORAC:
Patagonia Maqui is the first company to test maqui berry with Total ORAC, the patent pending new method from Brunswick Labs.
Patagonia Premium Maqui demonstrates exceptional broad-spectrum antioxidant performance using Total ORAC, the next-generation antioxidant testing method from Brunswick Labs. Patagonia Premium Maqui powder delivers a Total ORAC value of over 6,100 per gram – but what does this really tell us about its antioxidant credentials? More than you might think. View our Total ORAC certificates in order to confirm our findings regarding antioxidant performance of the maqui.
Total ORAC is an important advancement in antioxidant analysis:
- The most comprehensive, broad-spectrum antioxidant method available
- Brings a whole new level of understanding to the radical protective properties of products
Total ORAC does not just measure against Peroxyl, it measures broad-spectrum performance against the known top 5 free radicals:
- ORAC – Peroxyl
- HORAC – Hydroxyl
- NORAC – Peroxynitrite
- SOAC – Singlet oxygen
- SORAC – Superoxide anion
Understanding Antioxidant performance against individual free radicals is important:
- These free radicals are formed, behave, and are defended against differently
- They all contribute to “oxidative stress,” or cellular damage and broad human health concerns caused by inflammation, DNA and protein damage
- They are each implicated in serious health problems like cardiovascular disease
Total ORAC provides valuable measurement of a product’s broad-spectrum antioxidant capacity:
- No one free radical is “more important” than another
- Every product has a unique “fingerprint” against each free radical
- Each product’s fingerprints compare to other products’ results for the same radicals
Patagonia Premium Maqui:
- Demonstrates exceptional antioxidant performance against each of the 5 free radicals
- Delivers especially powerful protection against:
- Hydroxyl – the most volatile and reactive of free radicals, it can cause the broadest damage and cannot be defended against by endogenous antioxidants
- Superoxide Anion – known as “the mother of free radicals” because it is the precursor to other free radicals such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl
- Outperforms Acai powder against each free radical
- Outperforms antioxidant standards vitamins C and E in 3 of 5 radicals
- Outperforms Cocoa powder in 3 of 5 free radicals
MAQUI BERRY & GLYCATION INHIBITION:
Glycation inhibition measure the ability of a substance to interfere with, or inhibit, the process by which glycation damage to protein occurs. Protein glycation leads to the formation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGE’s), which are implicated in a wide range of health concerns.
- Patagonia Maqui Glycation inhibition: 8.97 mg/mL (IC50)
- Outperforms reference standards including vitamin C, cranberry powder, coffe fruit powder and mangosteen powder.
- * IC50 represents the concentration at which glycation is inhibited by 50%.
