Maqui Berry Photos

After reviewing most of what is on the internet today regarding the maqui berry, I have decided to post actual photos that I have recently taken of the maqui berry bush as well as the maqui berry itself. There are many popular maqui berry products being sold on the internet right now that are not even using photos of the actual maqui berry in their marketing literature. So far, I have seen acai berries, blueberries, black currant berries and calafate berries being misrepresented as the maqui berry. I would like to start by educating the public and online consumers who are researching information about maqui or maqui related products.

Let’s start with what is NOT a maqui berry:

1. Calafate (Berberis Darwinii) – Also known as Darwins Barberry, it grows all over southern Chile and Argentina. This is certainly an interesting berry in its own right, but it is not a maqui berry. This is a photo I see misrepresented all over the internet.   Example 1, Example 2, Example 3

 2. Blackcurrant (Carissa spinarum) - Also known as the conkerberry, this berry does not grow in Chile and is native to Europe and Northern Asia. The berry is also being commercially grown in New Zealand. This photo is being widely distributed on the internet and falsely indicates the image of a true maqui berry.

3. Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum)I am one of the biggest fans of the blueberry, but it is far from being a maqui berry. Blueberries are grown and cultivated around the world as well as Chile, but far north of where the bulk of where the maqui berry is harvested. I have seen alot of blueberry photos on the internet being misrepresented as maqui berries. In the rush to market the maqui berry, there have been alot of companies not take the time to accurately convey the true representation of the product. We can only wonder what else they are misrepresenting.

4. Acai palm berryThe acai palm berry from Brazil has been the superfruit leader for the last several years. The marketing of acai has truly been astonishing and it is said to promote everything from weight loss to colon cleansing. The fact is that the berry is a moderate performing antioxidant and contains omega-3 fatty acids as well as omega-6 and omega-9. We are a fan of the acai, but we steer clear of the hype. Acai is not maqui.
